ULTRA-GRO HORTICULTURAL PERLITE is a white, sterile propagating medium used by growers to keep soil loose, allowing air and water to reach roots. It is ideal for seeds germination, for potting plants, to root cuttings, to hold cut flower and to help establish new lawns. ULTRA-GRO HORTICULTURAL PERLITE, is a unique volcanic mineral which expands to about 13 to 18 times its original volume when it is heated to a temperature of approximately 1600 F (871 C). During the heating process, the mineral particles pop like popcorn and form a granular, snow-white material that is so light in weight it weighs only about 5 to 8 pounds per cubic foot (980-128 kg/M3). Each particle of perlite is comprised of tiny closed air cells or bubbles. The surface of each particle is covered with tiny cavities which provide an extremely large surface area. These surface cavities trap moisture and make it available to plant roots. In addition, because of the physical shape of each particle of perlite, air passages are formed in the growing media thereby providing excellent aeration. Fertilizer appropriate to the plants being grown should be added. Horticultural perlite is available in several different grades. The coarse sand size is ideal for general gardening applications.
WHEN HORTICULTURAL PERLITE IS ADDED TO HEAVY CLAY SOILS, WATER PONDING AND SURFACE CRUSTING MAY BE ELIMINATED....
In addition, plant roots, can easily penetrate the perlite/soil growing media and develop more fully. Horticultural perlite can be particularly advantageous in modifying the structure of general garden soil, patio plantings and roofscapes.

GENERAL GARDEN APPLICATIONS
A) Soil in vegetable and flower gardens can be conditioned by cultivating with a fork or rototiller to a depth of 6 to 12 inches (150-300 mm). Work into the cultivated soil a 4 inches (100 mm) layer of a 50-50 mixture of horticultural perlite (UltraGro / AgriLite) and peat moss, if the soil is rich in organic material, the peat moss may be eliminated. The same procedure may be followed in preparing lawn areas for sodding or seeding. Established lawns can be renovated with horticultural perlite. The lawn area should be spiked or plugged and horticultural perlite spread on the surface and raked into the spike or plug holes. The perlite will work its way into the root zone to provide aeration and drainage. If the garden area is very large, the borne gardener may condition only the rows or areas where planting is to take place. Thus if the procedure is continued for 2-3 years, the entire garden area will eventually be conditioned. Because horticultural perlite is inorganic, it will not deteriorate in the soil but will continue to function for many years.
When you plant shrubs or trees, simply dig a 6 inch (150mm) planting pocket larger than the plant roots. Add a mixture of 1/3 soil, 1/3 horticultural perlite and 1/3 peat moss or compost may be used to fill the hole and complete the planting procedure. For shrubs or trees, it should be thoroughly watered. As the soil is already loose, the roots can now easily penetrate and develop in the friable growing media.
B) PATIO PLANTING ULTRA-GRO / AGRI- LITE HORTICULTURAL PERLITE is an ideal material for patio plantings in container boxes, tubs and ornamental containers. As the add mixiture of perlite and soil is light in weight, handling is made easy for re-arrangement for displays or to protect it against adverse weather. A suggested soil mix for patio planters is 1/3 horticultural perlite, 1/3 peat moss and 1/3 composted wood product such as bark or shavings. Patio plantings will require more frequent watering than garden planting as they tend to dry out faster.
APPLICATIONS AND USES OF ULTRA-GRO / AGRI-LITE HORTICULTURAL PERLITE
I. INDOOR AND ROOFTOP GARDENS HOUSE PLANTS / PLANTERS / ROOTING CUTTINGS
LIGHTWEIGHT ROOFTOP GARDENING
For rooftop gardens, where weight is a factor, the advantages of Ultra-Gro / Agri-Lite Horticultural Perlite is outstanding. Wet sandy loam weighs about 120-140lbs/cu.ft. (l 920-2240 kg/ml ); perlite-peat moss mixed in equal volume will weigh about 35 lbs./ ft³ (56kg/ml)when wet. This difference can be critical where supporting structures such as roofs must be considered. In addition, with a perlite mix, the growing media can be several times as deep as, a con-ventional soil without increasing weight. Thus, the rooftop gardener can grow larger trees, and plants.
A mixture of 50% Ultra-gro Horticultural Perlite and 50% peat moss is recommemded. A 100% perlite mix may be used. Place this mixture in tray or pot, insert cutting and firm the mix around the cutting. Flats or trays that permit water drainage should be used.
SOIL MIXES FOR PLANTS
Ultra-gro Horticultural Perlite is the ideal material for indoor and outdoor displays in planter boxes, tubs and ornamental containers. Because the material is so light in weight, the cost of planter maintenance is greatly reduced. In addition, plant-ers may be easily moved whether on balconies, pa-tios, sundecks or similar locations. The perlite mix for planters, should be the same as is used with house plants.
II. LAWNS AND GARDENS / PLANTING SHRUBS AND BULBS / STARTING SEEDS FOR GARDENS, FLOWER BEDS, AND NEWLY PREPARED LAWNS
FOR GARDENS, FLOWER BEDS, AND NEWLY PREPARED LAWNS
Cultivate soil to depth of 12 inches (300 mm) with fork or rototiller. Mix thoroughly equal parts 1/2 Ultra Gro Horticultural Perlite and 1/2 moist peat moss. Spread 4 inches (100 mm) of this mixture over cultivated soil. Plant seeds or plants in usual manner, water well.
IMPROVING ESTABLISHED LAWNS CAN BE FUN WITH HORTICULTURAL PERLITE
Spread 1/4 inches (6 mm) of Ultra Gro Horticultural Perlite over lawn area and water heavily. To achieve best results aerify lawn and fertilize at time of top-dressing with perlite. For compacted, heavily used turf area, repeat this top-dressing procedure every four months during growing seasons.
PLANTING TREES, SHRUBS, OR VINES
Dig planting pocket 6 inches (150 ram) larger than plant roots. Mix equal parts 1/3 Ultra-Gro Horticultural Perlite, 1/3 soil, and 1/3 moist organic matter such as peat moss. Place plant in hole of same level it was growing previously. Tamp the perlite mixture well into the area around roots. Water thoroughly.
Prepare a mixture of 1/2 Ultra Gro Horticultural Perlite and 1/2 peat moss. Fill trays or pots with mixture. Screen 1/4 inches (1.5 mm) of spaghnum or peat moss through fine screen onto surface of mixture and sow seeds. Use screened material for covering seeds when required. Place trays or pots in polyethylene bags or cover with glass. Remove covering when seeds have germinated.
III. CUTTING AND DORMANT PLANT FLOWER ARRANGING, MULCHING, STORAGE AND PACKING OF BULBS, PACKING CUTTING, AND DORMANT PLANTS
PACKING CUTTINGS AND DORMANT PLANTS
Mix equal parts Ultra-Gro Horticultural Perlite and wet peat moss by volume. Squeeze out excess moisture in the mix and package plants or cuttings in plastic or kraft paper wrap
Ultra-Gro Horticultural Perlite is ideal for supporting stems of cut flowers in preparing flower arrangements. It is clean, sterile, attractive, and holds water on the surface of the particle, making the water available to the stems. Fill container with Horticultural Perlite, saturate thoroughly with water, pour off excess water and insert flowers. Horticultural Perlite will hold flowers firmly in place.
Ultra-Gro Horticultural Perlite is excellent for mulching flower beds, roses and shrubs. It prevents drying out and it prevents soil from compacting. It also insulates against temperature changes and provides soil aeration. Spread 11/2-2 inches (35-50 mm) of Horticultural Perlite over loosened soil around plants and mix with 1-2 inches (25-50 mm) of surface soil.
STORING BULBS AND ROOT CROPS
Ultra-Gro Horticultural Perlite is the ideal material for use around bulbs, corns, and tuberous roots. Fill storage container to depth of l inch (25 mm) with Horticultural Perlite, place bulbs or roots on top, cover completely with another layer of perlite. In cases where moisture is required, moisten surface lightly with fine moist at infrequent intervals.
